Have you ever wondered what truly sets you apart in the workplace? Beyond skills learned through training and education, there’s a deeper layer of personal capability waiting to be discovered: your inherent strengths.
Throughout my career coaching journey, I’ve discovered that understanding your core strengths isn’t just beneficial—it’s transformative. Two powerful assessments have been instrumental in this exploration: the Gallup StrengthsFinder and the VIA Survey of Character Strengths.
Strengths vs. Skills: What’s the Difference?
It’s crucial to distinguish between strengths and skills. Strengths are innate qualities developed early in life—they’re essentially your natural talents. Skills, by contrast, are learned capabilities you’ve acquired through education and practice. While related, they’re fundamentally different.
My personal experience revealed that my top strengths are “Connectedness” and “Relator”—qualities that enable me to form meaningful relationships and understand team dynamics at a deeper level. These aren’t just abstract concepts; they’re practical advantages in professional settings.
Preparing for Your Next Career Opportunity
When preparing for interviews or career transitions, here’s a strategic approach:
- Take a strength assessment to understand your unique capabilities
- Review job descriptions through the lens of your strengths
- Develop STAR or SOAR stories that showcase how your inherent strengths solve real-world challenges.
