The consequences for taking social security early are permanent, so you need to know what’s at stake.
As a professional career coach in Silicon Valley, I’ve spent years helping individuals find purpose in their encore careers. Recently, I shared my personal experience with taking Social Security at 62.
While I discussed the benefits in a previous video, today I want to dive into the consequences of that decision. Information I believe is crucial for anyone considering following a similar path.
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that taking Social Security before your full retirement age (FRA) will result in a permanent reduction in your monthly benefits. This reduction applies for the rest of your life, so it’s not something you can change later on.
Additionally, there are limits on how much you can earn while collecting early Social Security. In 2024, that limit has been $22,320 in net income. For every $2 you earn above that threshold, you’ll be penalized $1 in Social Security benefits.
Keep in mind, these numbers are subject to change each year.
However, once you reach your FRA year, that limit increases significantly until the month of your birthday, after which there are no more earnings restrictions.
The good news is withdrawals from retirement accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs don’t count towards that earnings limit, as long as you’re at least 59.5 years old.
So, you can supplement your Social Security with tax-advantaged retirement fund withdrawals without facing penalties.
Ultimately, the decision of when to start collecting Social Security is a highly personal one, with financial, tax, and lifestyle implications.
To ensure you make the right choice for your unique situation, I encourage you to watch my video on this topic and then consult with a qualified financial planner.
