Today, I want to talk about how to answer two common interview questions: “What happened at your last job?” and “Why are you looking to leave your current job?”
These are common interview questions I believe you can shine with your answers using my approach.
The key is what I refer to as an “Exit Statement.”
Let me explain.
The Exit Statement consists of two parts.
Part one should be a concise response to the question, no longer than one or two sentences.
For example, “Intel had a restructuring that eliminated 11% of their workforce. My position was one of them.”
This now sets the stage for part two.
This is where you turn it around. Instead of stopping on a negative note, you are going to end on a positive note.
“However, I see this as an opportunity to explore new industries where I can apply my skills and experience effectively.”
This shows optimism and resilience, which hiring managers appreciate.
If you’re currently employed and thinking about making a change, express your excitement about new opportunities.
“After working three years with Soundbite, I’ve made a conscious decision to pursue new opportunities that will further develop my career.”
To make your exit statement authentic, write it out, and practice saying it out loud.
You may need to practice this for a few days, but soon it will sound natural and in your own words. It’s a skill worth honing before the interview.
