Today, I want to talk to you about something that is just as important, maybe even more important than negotiating salary, and that is negotiating a job title. Yes, you heard me right, job title. It’s not just a fancy label, it can have a significant impact on your day-to-day happiness, but also show career progression which is extremely valuable in your career development, especially as the years go by.
So, how do you go about negotiating a job title?
It is what I talk about in today’s video.
From Offer to Title How to Negotiate Like a Pro
It’s very similar to negotiating a salary, based upon facts, not emotions. When you’re made the offer, you want to thank the individual for selecting you as their candidate of choice. And use that phrase, “candidate of choice”, because it’s a great way to remind them of all the other candidates that they have eliminated, and do they really want to start the process over again?
Remember, you do have some negotiating power during this time. So thank them for selecting you, and tell them that you’re very excited about the offer. Then, you can ask them if they’re open to discussing the job title. Validate why you deserve this particular title, based on your previous accomplishments and achievements.
The second part of negotiating a job title is to show the benefit, this could be for the company. Let’s say that the job title of “senior manager” is going to lead you to more credibility when speaking with clients, customers, and other stakeholders. And with that credibility, you’re going to have more influence in closing deals. This is going to be the benefit for the company.
So, there you have it, two simple steps to negotiating a job title. Validate the reasons why you deserve that higher level position, and then show what’s in it for the company. It’s as simple as that.
