Office politics—just hearing the phrase might make you cringe.
If you’re like most people, it probably conjures up words like “frustrating,” “toxic,” or “unnecessary.”
But the reality is, office politics exist everywhere. From churches to nonprofits, from Fortune 500 companies to small firms. No organization is immune.
So, how do you navigate this often-dreaded aspect of work life?
I believe there’s a better way to look at office politics—one that can actually help you advance in your career.
Let’s start with this: countless studies have shown that understanding relationships and building influence at work are far more critical to success than simply keeping your head down and doing your job.
It’s not just about completing tasks; it’s about connecting with people
But I’m not talking about LinkedIn connections here. I mean genuine, in-person relationships with those around you—across all departments and at all levels.
Think about who you spend time with at work.
Are you only networking within your own department or with people who are similar to you?
It’s time to broaden your circle.
Be curious about what others do, engage with them, and understand their roles
This is Networking 101.
Offer your help when you can.
This kind of relationship-building is often an unwritten part of the job description but is essential if you want to advance.
Of course, I recognize that office politics can sometimes be toxic, and some environments might be filled with those who thrive on stepping over others.
If you find yourself in such a situation, where politics are more about backstabbing than collaboration, it might be time to consider a change
A balanced approach to office politics focused on positive influence and relationship-building can be a powerful tool for career growth.
So, if you’re looking to succeed, stop avoiding office politics and start engaging in them constructively.
