In today’s video, I provide some critical job search advice after 50.
As you may know, I specialize in working with people in mid-to-late career, and I’ve been doing this since 2012.
Age discrimination is a reality. If you are over the age of 40, you are considered a “protected class” under The Age Discrimination Employment Act established in 1967.
Yet, it still happens.
In 2021, there were nearly 13,000 age discrimination charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
So how do you put the odds in your favor?
The Resume
Start with your resume. You need to age-proof it.
Don’t include work experience over 15 years.
For relevant work experience older than 15 years, place it under a new heading called Additional Work Experience and do not include dates.
This helps you avoid showing your age and is perfectly acceptable.
Stay Curious
You must be on a constant learning path.
Research shows that older workers are often perceived negatively as unwilling to learn.
You can counter these perceptions by staying up to date with technology and industry trends.
There are many online resources to help you acquire new skills, and you can showcase them on your resume.
Social Media
Another important aspect is your online presence, especially on LinkedIn.
Customize your LinkedIn URL to show that you’re tech-savvy and active in the professional world.
A strong LinkedIn profile can make a big difference.
Attitude Matters
During interviews, think of these four things:
- You’re a professional,
- You have no problems.
- You do not create problems,
- You are there to solve their problems.
Age discrimination often starts with perception, but you can often overcome these challenges.
