If you’re considering the prospect of finding work out of state, I’ve got some valuable insights for you.
In my latest video, I delve into the dos and don’ts of seeking employment out-of-state.
First and foremost, it’s essential to be honest on your resume.
Some suggest leaving off your current city and state if you’re planning to relocate, but I disagree. With more companies using applicant tracking systems, including your location can work in your favor.
You might wonder if it’s okay to fudge the truth a little by listing your desired location as your current one. Regarding this, honesty is always the best policy.
Instead, state your current location, followed by “relocating to” and the timeframe or “willing to relocate.” I share how to do this in the video.
Cover letters can be a game-changer when you are job searching out-of-state.
Talk about your willingness to relocate but don’t make it the primary focus. Start by selling yourself and only mention your relocation plans toward the end.
But here’s the secret sauce for a successful out-of-state job hunt: Networking.
To build your network in your target location, I recommend starting on platforms like LinkedIn.
In my video, I demonstrate how to search for connections and start building a network in your desired city.
Keep in mind that 80% of jobs are filled through networking and referrals. It’s about building relationships and making connections in your target area.
In addition, when you start searching for jobs in your desired location, leveraging your new network can be a huge advantage.
