Not everyone is embracing retirement.
Last week, I came across a startling statistic that made me pause: 61% of people fear retirement more than death.
I understand this fear. After decades of being known as “the attorney” or “the program manager,” the prospect of becoming “just retired” can feel like losing a core part of our identity.
These fears are completely normal, but they shouldn’t overshadow the opportunities that lie ahead. Retirement isn’t an ending – it’s a graduation into a new chapter of life.
The key lies in approaching this transition with purpose and passion.
Take my friend Mike, for example. After retiring, he discovered a passion for chess that evolved into teaching children and organizing tournaments.
Another colleague, Keith, transformed his love for photography into a thriving second act, traveling the country in his van and selling his work through calendars and prints.
What activities make you lose track of time? This is often the first clue to finding your purpose.
For me, that purpose came through creating content to help others navigate their own retirement journeys. I spend about 20-25 hours weekly on this mission, and it gives my days structure and meaning.
