CV vs Resume – Understanding the Differences.
Have you ever wondered about the differences?
If so, you are not alone.
Eight out of 10 people can’t explain what a CV is.
It is not something you encounter every day.
In today’s video, I break down the CV.
CV vs Resume – Understanding the Differences
In short, a CV, or curriculum vitae, validates your credentials and qualifications, making it perfect for certain industries.
They are usually much longer than a resume, sometimes up to 12 pages.
Like a resume, it starts with your personal contact information, followed by a professional summary.
But unlike the traditional resume, the CV will have a much stronger emphasis on education and training.
It will include things like graduate fieldwork, study abroad, research experience, publications, awards, language skills, and more.
It’s a comprehensive document that showcases your expertise.
So, when do you need a CV?
Think academia, medicine, and scientific research.
Professors, doctors, and researchers often use CVs because credentials matter more than competence in these fields.
But here’s the bottom line: using a CV for positions like project manager or IT won’t make you stand out.
In fact, it could hurt your chances.
Recruiters are more interested in your competence and work history.
Not to mention, they do not want to read through a 12-page resume.
So, if you’re in a mid-to-late career and not pursuing academia or medicine, focus on your resume instead.
