I
In this video, I dive into the big question: should you consider taking a contract position?
Contract vs. Permanent?
Now, I won’t give you a one-size-fits-all answer because it truly depends on your unique situation, needs, and values. But let me share my own journey.
Back in the ’80s, I was in the banking industry. The Savings and Loan crisis shook things up, and I often found myself job-hopping due to mergers.
After several rounds of unemployment, I decided to make a change.
I had developed an interest in computers and enrolled in a 6-month program on Local Area Networks.
Almost immediately after graduating, I started getting calls from recruiters for short-term contract work.
In just over a year, I worked for a large computer retailer, an Internet Service Provider, a medical software company, and a semiconductor company.
Contracting had its perks.
Quick salary growth, learning on the fly, and minimal office politics.
But it had downsides too—no job security, no benefits, and you might feel like an outsider.
Ultimately, it worked for me, leading to an 18-year career in tech.
But it’s not for everyone.
